Both grandma and grandpa better guard their closets because, this fall, vintage is back—and it’s back big! Looking at the runways, beauty trends are getting more natural and clothes are getting more conservative. Ruffles showing femininity, shiny accents, mature looks, long sweaters, tweed—the list of vintage items that are coming back with a vengeance goes on and on, bending genders like never before. In addition to vintage, the military look is back for another season with a twist—leather. The all black look from the movie The Matrix was sprinkled throughout runway presentations, making the fall 2012 runway look like a tale of two personalities.
As the seasons change, fall runway looks account for lots of layers to shed as the weather goes from warm to cold. Fur creeps into the closet as well as tights, and (gasp) whites WELL after Labor Day.
Here’s how to make those very different fashion personalities work to your advantage.
Dresses aren’t left in the summer closet; they are just updated and layered for warmth, with a harder edge than we have seen in previous seasons. Substantial fabric, metallic accents, and leather are the three ingredients necessary to pull of this look. Tommy Hilfiger continues to impress with his interpretation of the trend.
Pull Off the Look
You have two options here, a vest with a long sleeve counterpart or a jacket. This jacket by Kenneth Cole Reaction is one of our favorites. It trades zippers for buttons up the left side, a high angled collar and a hem that stops at the hip. If you are going the vest route, we recommend borrowing this black herringbone vest from your boyfriend’s closet and then softening it up with a black long sleeve dress and some sexy boots. Either way, boots are essential, the farther they go up your calf the better. We recommend the UGG® Australia Women’s Black Cosima Tall Boot. It’s plush pebbled leather, fixed metal rivets and wooden heel are the perfect statement in this The Matrix meets the battlefield outfit.
White after Labor Day—this fall, you bet it’s not only appropriate it’s the trend to grab on to. Head to toe white graces long coats, feminine tops and flowing pants. Even the shoes have gone crystal white. Here, J. Mendel goes white out, delivering a classy look that says, “I’m feminine, but I’m an angel who means business.”

Head to toe white, or ivory, delivers an angelic look, perfect for when you want to make a statement. Start off with pairing a white undershirt with this soft and delicate cardigan from Umgee USA with a pair of white dress pants or skinny jeans. Then, tie it all together with a pair of lily boots. We like the UGG® Australia Women’s Heirloom Lace Up. It’s an all-weather breath of fresh air with a cotton weave upper and sweet grosgrain lacing up the back.
Go Digging in Grandma’s Closet
Grandma is one stylish lady! This fall, granny gets her due as true vintage bursts into style. Tweeds, sheers, patterns, lace, anything classic goes when you are going vintage. Tory Burch paired this look on the fall 2012, a sea of blue, flowers, and patterns.

Vintage is a tale of two personalities, loose and comfortable or tailored and trim. Lucky Brand has captured this vibe quite well, bringing back paisley, embroidery, busy patterns, and metallic embellishments. Embellish heavily up top and keep it simple on the feet or wear strategically placed accents and let your shoes make the statement. TOMS Shoes Corbel is the perfect shoe to bridge the summer and fall seasons. The sturdy canvas will keep your foot warm while the peep toe says, “Hey, it’s not even in the 50s yet!”
