Styling is all about mixing and matching! There a lot of things to consider, but to easily style dresses there two areas you should focus on: the cut and the accessories. The accessories alone can dress up or dress down any look, but the right cut can really complement your figure. With summer in full gear, effortless style can truly be effortless if you add these tips to your stylish bag of tricks! Check out our dress collection from Dex for more inspiration!
The High Low Hem
The high-low hem is a super trendy look these days. They’re flirty, elegant, and perfect for summer! However, the hem can make you seem shorter because the shape flows downward. So it’s a good idea to add some extra height. As you can see, our model, Phoebe, is wearing the Triss sandals by Tsubo. She’s already quite tall, but it adds a little more length to her legs to even out the hem. For casual looks, hair with soft waves and chunky bangles are great for the beach and outdoor lunches. The hem on more formal dresses are already a bold statement. Keep your jewelry simple and have your hair in an updo for an overall look that’s elegant, yet feisty!
Actress Jennifer Lawrence and our model, Phoebe, are wearing two very different strapless dresses with two very different hair lengths. When you go strapless, all the focus is drawn to your shoulders, neck, and face. In both examples above, these ladies let their natural attributes shine! For bolder looks, choose statement earrings or a statement necklace, but not both. It could result in looking cluttered rather than complementing your shoulders!
Short and Chic
Short hems elongate the legs for women of all heights, but not all short lengths are equal! For shorter women, hems that come to the knee can make you look shorter as your body may look disproportionately longer to your legs. We recommend hems that stop at least 2-3 inches above the knee. On the other hand, taller women face the issue of “showing too much leg” simply because of their height. The safest measure for all heights is to aim for hems that at least drop to the mid-thigh. It’s still elegant and sexy without seeming scandalous.
This style of dress isn’t usually a casual one whether it’s sheer, short, long, fitted, or loose. It’s too elegant to be just some ordinary dress. The accessory that will make the largest impact will probably be your purse! Bigger is not better in this case. Colors and patterns aside, the shape and size of your purse will pull the outfit together. In most cases, you should opt for a clutch or a small purse with a skinny strap. However, casual long sleeve dresses, like shirt dresses, are casually chic and fit nicely with bulkier bags.
Maxi dresses are a favorite for two major reasons: they are super easy to wear and transition seamlessly between seasons! They’re usually constructed in light weight materials with a hint of stretch fabric. It’s easy wear for summer and for colder months you just add on the layers. Maxi dresses are really easy to style too, especially solid colors or simple patterns. Since they are full length, you’re styling around a bigger space. You can almost over accessorize and still have an awesome look. Statement jewelry? Great! A denim jacket with a chunky bag? Fantastic! With maxi dresses, it truly is all about mixing and matching accessories and layers.
