Back to School: A “New Shoe” Guide

Row of shoes and boots on a wooden floor

It’s that time again. Summer is coming to an end and it’s that hectic time of back-to-school shopping. While you’ll be stocking up on school supplies, don’t forget about your (or your kids’) feet! Whether it’s the first day of kindergarten or the last semester of college, here are 3 styles you must consider investing in. Remember, quality is priority. You need it to last for at least a school year, right?

Sneakers With Rubber Soles

They’re already a staple of casual wear, but, more importantly, they offer more protection and stability than flip-flops, sandals, flats, or dress shoes. Canvas sneakers and leather sneakers are both common, but it’ll be up to you to decide what suits you best. Canvas is lighter and cheaper, but leather is more durable and a little more expensive.

Make sure you go for rubber soles. They provide grip and can handle all the movement you’ll be putting them though. Remember, shoe laces andstraps can adjust the fit as the shoe stretches out over time and laces can always be replaced.

Athletic Shoes

This is especially important for kids in the K-12 education levels. You have to consider recess, physical education classes, and extra curricular athletics. Unless you are required to purchase specific shoes (cleats, track spikes, dance shoes, etc.) you should invest in a pair of good athletic shoes. There are two main types to consider: running shoes and training shoes. There’s a common misconception that they’re the same thing, but they’re actually designed for different movements. Take a look at some of our Onitsuka Tiger™ shoes.

Onitsuka Tiger™ Men’s Sakurada in White/Navy

The obvious differences will be in the size and the tread on the sole. Running shoes, in general, tend to be a little bulkier because of the extra padding. You’ll find more arch support and a rugged sole that should extend up the toe and heel a bit. They are intended to grip different terrain and are specifically designed for forward motion.

On the other hand, training shoes tend to be on the slimmer side, have a flatter sole, and a lighter tread. They’re not intended for long distance running, but geared for more repetitive movements like weight training or aerobics.

Dress Shoes

There will always be dressy functions to go to at any age. Most ladies will invest in a few pairs of shoes. Men, on the other hand, may need some convincing. Invest in a good quality shoe that you can wear to multiple occasions in multiple outfits. You don’t have to wear that one pair every single time, but having that go-to option can really save some time if you don’t have much of it. Men may stumble upon the whole “leather sole vs. rubber sole” thing. At this point, it’s all about personal preference and how formal the occasion is. Generally, the consensus for male dress shoes is that rubber isn’t very formal.

Men, if you’re not into dress shoes, opt for some leather loafers or classic leather sneakers. Tip: if you decide to go with sneakers to a dressy occasion, save the crazy colors and funky laces for another day.

Maxi Multi-Way!

Summer is all about skin: leg bearing, shoulder flaunting, sun-kissed skin. What if you’re sun burned and left to doubt the integrity of your sunscreen? What if you were too busy to shave your legs? What if you want a change from your typical shorts and sleeveless top outfit? A maxi dress can save the day.

The best part? It makes for an incredibly comfortable outfit that shorts or skinny jeans just can’t give you. A simple maxi dress is pretty versatile and can be as casual or dressed up as you want it to be. Eh, they’re not right for my body type — this is a lie. One big fat lie. So don’t believe it! A single item like a belt or a jacket can make these “intimidating” dresses conform to your body type. Whether you prefer a comfortable loose fit or something curve-hugging, something sleeveless or not, or something detailed or simple, changing up the look is super easy.

Don’t believe us? Check out the two outfits below that we made using Polyvore.

See? A change in accessories, handbags, or shoes turned a simple maxi dress into two very distinct looks. It can easily be dressed up or dressed down. Stylists and fashionistas will always vouch for having a set of great basics: plain tanks, classic solid v-necks, camis—you know, things that can be layered. A maxi dress (or skirt!) can be one of those wonderful things.

Try out mixing and matching 2 or 3 pieces around a maxi dress or skirt. You’ll be surprised how many different outfits you can make!

Celebrity Look: Stay on Trend with Lacoste Sneakers

Celebrity Look: Lacoste Sneakers

Celebrities and fashionistas on both coasts are bringing sneakers back for everyday glamour and easy comfort. Leanra Medine and Anna Bulbrook were sporting Lacoste sneakers at this year’s Coachella. Superstars like Gisele Bundchen and Josh Duhamel have been recently photographed sporting their own pairs for high profile daytime events and casual evenings out.

With a huge range of colors and styles, Lacoste sneakers are a great way to stay on trend, and in comfort!

Rather than just wearing sneakers with gym clothes, consider pairing your sneakers with bright patterned jeans or colorful printed pants. An airy summer cotton sundress or pretty shorts also go well with this trendy but time honored shoe style.

When running after this trend, make sure you take advantage of the Lacoste raffle going on now at Designer Studio Store. With every pair purchased, you are entered to win a second pair free! Just make sure you buy before May 15th.

Express Yourself with New Daring Looks!

New Year, New Looks!

New Year, New Looks!

With a new year comes a new perspective, a new way of doing things, and a new set of resolutions. Why not start the year with a daring attitude about your style and express yourself in a bold way? If you’re tired of the same old sweats, jeans, and t-shirts, or you want to wear vampy, sexy looks, let the New Year bring out the new you.

Now’s the time to have the courage to wear a skirt above your knee, a low-cut blouse, a mix and match of patterns, or just change your look completely. Maybe most people know you as the sporty type who only wears jeans, sneakers, and your favorite team shirt, or you’re the girl-next-door type who wears only slacks, flats, and conservative clothing. Dare to be different this year, and rock a whole new look!

We’ll help you find the right looks to bring out the new, “daring” you with a few simple tips.

Go glam!

Ramp up the vamp by changing out those sneakers for sexy high heels, and toss aside those faded blue jeans for a short mini-skirt to make this look work for you. Add a snug tee or sweater, or really go bold with an off-the-shoulder blouse or plunging neckline. Incorporate bold accessories like big bangles, colorful earrings, or a stylish hat and you’ll turn some heads!

Turn down the volume!

Maybe you’ve been the glamour girl for too long and want to take your style in a whole different direction by going sporty or taking on a more classic style. If your friends are used to seeing you covered in accessories, bright colors, funky shoes, and lots of flashy jewelry, make them take a double-take when you change out those bright colors for muted tones, funky shoes for sophisticated pumps, and the flashy jewelry for simple accessories.

Embrace the true You!

Do you wear certain styles because you want to please everyone but yourself? Ask yourself what you really want, and embrace it. If you’ve always worn earthy tones and classic styles like slacks, flats, button down shirts and few accessories but inside you’re a boho chic, then go for it! Dare to be different, so switch out the slacks to a flowing, flowery dress, slip your feet into sandals or moccasins, and mix and match fabrics, colors, and prints.

HELLO ROCKSTARS! Say hello to my new Toms! Seriously…I’m in love with these shoes! They are so comfy, you can walk in them for hours without feeling any pain. A couple of days ago I went for a long walk on the beach, so I decided to wear them 🙂 It was amazing!

I am thinking of buy another pair, maybe the red ones? They would be perfect for a trip to Disneyland.

Do you already own a pair?  If not, you can find them at Designer Studio

Rockin’ the New Year

The never ending dilemma of every female who ever lived and the burning question of all time has to be  – ‘What am I going to wear??!!’   We’ve come up with some suggestions that should help you usher in the New Year with style.

Family gatherings are hard enough as it is.  Trying to figure out what to wear doesn’t help the situation.  Usually these are casual affairs so a nice pair of jeans, a stylish shirt and some cute shoes will do the trick.  You could also wear a sweater over skinny jeans tucked into boots.  This way you can be casual and fashionable while spending some quality time with your favorite family members while avoiding the not-so-favorite ones (I think we all have those!).

When you’re ready to head out that night to welcome in the New Year, casual just won’t cut it.  You can dress up your favorite pair of jeans with a flirty frock and glittery wedge heels.  If you prefer a dressy look, a long sleeved double knit sweater dress with black tights and ankle boots will keep you warm and trendy at the same time.

For guys ratty jeans and trashed shoes are not the way to go, even around family.  Pull on a simple five pocket jean and pair them with some casual sneakers for a classic look.  If you’re planning to head out to a late night party to welcome in the New Year, throw on a crisp button down long sleeve shirt and ward off the winter chill with a sport coat.
