The Right Shoes for 4th of July Parties!

Independence Day is just around the corner and there’s probably tons of party planning happening right now! Family and friends will be coming in from out of town, barbecue grills are getting ready, and parades are being perfected. With all the preparation in the works, don’t forget about preparing your outfit! More specifically, make sure your footwear can handle the day. Here are some tips in choosing the right shoes for the right kind of 4th of July party!

Beach Fun

In SoCal, you can guarantee that the beaches are going to be packed for the 4th of July weekend. For the beach, choices are usually narrowed down to flip flops, sandals, or going barefoot. However, if you’re a non-beach regular, don’t feel like you have to be barefoot. Even though the weather may be gloriously hot and the water may be refreshingly cold, non-beach goers often forget about the sand. First of all, the sand can hold a lot of heat. Second, depending on how close you are to the water, the sand is usually very soft. Basically, that means you’re going to get one heck of a leg work out. Simple flip flops or flat sandals will help you beat the heat and move around a little easier. Wear sneakers if you must, just be willing to deal with them getting a little sand filled.

Outdoor Picnic

People set up in large parks so that there’s plenty of room for the food and the games. This is not a time to wear delicate materials! For example, we love suede, but they are a little high maintenance and you’ll remember those stains for the rest of your life. We suggest sticking to footwear like sneakers or boots crafted in easy-wearing materials. Additionally, choose something that protects the greater surface of your feet. There may be some prickly grass or overly affectionate mosquitoes out there. For cool and casual sneakers, check out our Lacoste selection for men, women, and kids! Ladies, if you must wear heels, at least opt for wedges. They handle soft ground much better and won’t get stuck in it. They only shoe that should stab the earth are cleats, not pumps!

Fancy Soirée

Some people just like parties to be a little fancy regardless of the occasion! Even if you’re wearing a formal dress or suit, this is a time to be festive! It’s the perfect time to wear bold footwear and accessories. Even if your outfit is mostly made up of a dark neutral color like black or navy, spice it up with some color. For example, you can still be festive and chic if you wear a solid white ensemble with your shoes and accessories adding the red and blue. You’ll most likely be indoors, so go on ahead and wear those sky heels and stylish oxfords! Need some styling tips? We have some great tips on how to style dresses.

Firework Watching

Maybe you’ll be skipping the hustle and bustle of the parties and skip right to the fireworks show. While there’s no real reason to wear a specific type of shoe, we highly recommend something that has sturdy traction. Whether you’re in a crowded place or a secret location with the best view, you’ll need to be able to move around comfortably. Also, it’ll be night time. Regardless of where you are in the world, the temperature can drastically drop at night. So prepare your feet accordingly! You can’t go wrong with rubber outsoles. Sneakers are the obvious pick, but if you still want to tweak your style, try out some boat shoes. They are always a summer favorite! We have a great Sperry Top-Sider collection that are stylish, comfortable, and have very durable outsoles.

The High Low Hem

The high-low hem is a super trendy look these days. They’re flirty, elegant, and perfect for summer! However, the hem can make you seem shorter because the shape flows downward. So it’s a good idea to add some extra height. As you can see, our model, Phoebe, is wearing the Triss sandals by Tsubo. She’s already quite tall, but it adds a little more length to her legs to even out the hem. For casual looks, hair with soft waves and chunky bangles are great for the beach and outdoor lunches. The hem on more formal dresses are already a bold statement. Keep your jewelry simple and have your hair in an updo for an overall look that’s elegant, yet feisty!

Going Strapless

Actress Jennifer Lawrence and our model, Phoebe, are wearing two very different strapless dresses with two very different hair lengths. When you go strapless, all the focus is drawn to your shoulders, neck, and face. In both examples above, these ladies let their natural attributes shine! For bolder looks, choose statement earrings or a statement necklace, but not both. It could result in looking cluttered rather than complementing your shoulders!

Short and Chic

Short hems elongate the legs for women of all heights, but not all short lengths are equal! For shorter women, hems that come to the knee can make you look shorter as your body may look disproportionately longer to your legs. We recommend hems that stop at least 2-3 inches above the knee. On the other hand, taller women face the issue of “showing too much leg” simply because of their height. The safest measure for all heights is to aim for hems that at least drop to the mid-thigh. It’s still elegant and sexy without seeming scandalous.

This style of dress isn’t usually a casual one whether it’s sheer, short, long, fitted, or loose. It’s too elegant to be just some ordinary dress. The accessory that will make the largest impact will probably be your purse! Bigger is not better in this case. Colors and patterns aside, the shape and size of your purse will pull the outfit together. In most cases, you should opt for a clutch or a small purse with a skinny strap. However, casual long sleeve dresses, like shirt dresses, are casually chic and fit nicely with bulkier bags.

Maxi Mayhem

Maxi dresses are a favorite for two major reasons: they are super easy to wear and transition seamlessly between seasons! They’re usually constructed in light weight materials with a hint of stretch fabric. It’s easy wear for summer and for colder months you just add on the layers. Maxi dresses are really easy to style too, especially solid colors or simple patterns. Since they are full length, you’re styling around a bigger space. You can almost over accessorize and still have an awesome look. Statement jewelry? Great! A denim jacket with a chunky bag? Fantastic! With maxi dresses, it truly is all about mixing and matching accessories and layers.
