Now that 2017 is here, we can take a look at 2016 from a safe distant and confidently say the fashion world wasn’t the only one that saw its fair share of highs and lows.
When it came to street style, we saw a surplus of statement-making music merch, off-the-shoulder everything, vintage fit denim, and slip dresses. Even Google noticed the booming bomber jacket craze. Obviously, celebrities paved the way for a number of these trends.
And because anybody can look good with hours in the makeup chair and a stylist on hand for a red carpet appearance, but it takes actual effort and a sense of style to pull yourself together on any average day walking down the street, these stars were the definition of street style inspo for 2016.
10 | Emma Roberts
Emma Roberts continually manages to pull together an everyday look that’s both sophisticated and casual. Whether she’s sporting cropped, frayed jeans or her favorite seasonal velvet shoes, her ensemble feels original and attainable. Street style goals!
09 | Tom Hiddleston
With a Gucci campaign under his belt and a much-photographed relationship with Taylor Swift in 2016, Tom Hiddleston cemented his “fashionable dude” persona. He’s the perfect example of finding an outfit formula that works for you and sticking to it. His grey suede chukka boots, slim black jeans, and navy top combo is a no-fail, fuss-free look for any men out there who are struggling to look sharp.
08 | Bella Hadid
In the past year or so, Bella Hadid has gone from Gigi’s little sister to a full-fledged model in her own right. Besides walking big-name shows from Versace to Ralph Lauren, she’s also flaunting some serious personal style — one that’s equal parts sexy and sporty. Catch her in crop tops (with abs like hers, why not?) and track suits to thigh-high slit gowns and mini skirts.
07 | Alicia Vikander
Only three celebrities who ranked in 2015 also made the list this year, including Alicia Vikander, who rose one spot to #7. After winning Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars in February, Vikander proceeded to have a whirlwind year, stepping out with boyfriend Michael Fassbender and locking in the role of Lara Croft in the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot. We’ve never seen a pair of sneakers look so chic!
06 | Hailey Baldwin
Though we spent most of 2015 focusing on Hailey Baldwin’s closest friends, the model stole a bit of that spotlight in 2016. Hailey churned out a slew of gorgeous, covetable fall looks in particular. One day it was a combination of leather skinnies, boots, and a graphic pullover — while the next, a pretty skirt and coat look. The It model is no stranger to pushing the envelope when it comes to her personal style, which kind of makes her a next-level trendsetter.
05 | Zayn Malik
Though ZiGi has been a thing for more than a year now, Zayn’s style didn’t really make an impact on us until he stepped out wearing metal arms at the Met Gala in May. After spending the year as a solo artist, Zayn has embraced his newfound freedom to become more creative with fashion. Big boots, skinny jeans, and piled-on rings give his look a bold, grungy feel. Scruffy looks good on him.
04 | Rihanna
It’s no secret that Rihanna is the queen of making up her own fashion rules (who knew a wine glass could be an accessory?), but in 2016, she pushed the envelope even further. From her VERY puffy jacket moment to this mini skirt worn over a long button-down top, daring doesn’t even begin to explain her personal style. Not to mention, she was the creative force behind the best-selling Fenty x Puma collection. We’re betting RiRi will be responsible for some of the biggest trends of 2017, too.
03 | Blake Lively
Blake Lively gave birth in 2016 and, naturally, she took this opportunity to showcase some of the most enviable pregnancy style ever. Whether she was stepping out in an Elie Saab lace dress or a bomber jacket and jeans, Lively slayed the concrete catwalk. We can’t even pretend we don’t love the easygoing nature of that feminine, floral maxi styled with classic white Chucks.
02 | Kendall Jenner
Of course, we can’t talk street style without mentioning Kendall Jenner. Though she also made the list in 2015, Kendall’s flame didn’t burn out in the slightest. Some of our favorite outfit combos included: Sheer, pleated pants worn with a cropped graphic tee. Zip-up sock booties, white pants, and a fur stole. And (pictured) a silky slip dress over a plain white tee styled with a dazzling choker and over-the-knee boots. We’re already feeling inspired.
01 | Gigi Hadid
Our reigning queen of street style keeps her position on lock for 2016. And, dare we say, she’s upped her game to an even stronger level than last year. For the latter part of the year, Gigi swapped out distressed denim for lace-up leather leggings, she took print mixing to a whole new level, and still looked as all-American cute as ever. If you’re trying to stay ahead of the trends in 2017, keep an eye on Gigi.
