In celebration of the Costume Institute’s new exhibition “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garcons: Art of the In-Between,” the biggest celebrity names gathered in New York City for fashion’s most important night of the year — the Met Gala.
Rei Kawakubo has become an industry legend for her unconventional, avant-garde creations — many of which look more like art than fashion. She disregards the concept of flattering in favor of bold, statement-making pieces. Last night, influential designers took a stab at her flair for the dramatic by dressing the biggest It Girls in on-theme looks. Others weren’t so brave and, instead, chose to simply adopt Kawakubo’s signature hairstyle — a short, ultra-blunt bob with bangs. Find out who hit the mark.

Despite heaps of snow and bone-chilling wind, fashion’s most elite crowd flocked to New York over the course of the past week for NYFW 2017, with their street style game still in check. The key to pulling off street style in such weather was clearly choosing a look that was both versatile and cozy. Now that 2017 is here, we can take a look at 2016 from a safe distant and confidently say the fashion world wasn’t the only one that saw its fair share of highs and lows.
When it came to street style, we saw a surplus of statement-making music merch, off-the-shoulder everything, vintage fit denim, and slip dresses. Even Google noticed the booming bomber jacket craze. Obviously, celebrities paved the way for a number of these trends.
And because anybody can look good with hours in the makeup chair and a stylist on hand for a red carpet appearance, but it takes actual effort and a sense of style to pull yourself together on any average day walking down the street, these stars were the definition of street style inspo for 2016.
