How You Should Wear Your Makeup on NYE

Whether your New Year’s Eve is going to be low-key at home or you’re planning on dancing the night away at a club downtown, there’s nothing wrong with dressing a little festive and adding some glamour to your usual makeup routine. Take a note from fashion blogger Lesley of Fresh Lengths, who recommends green as the color of the season. She keeps her emerald eye shadow simple over the lid and adds some (holiday-appropriate) glitter. The lip is then muted to let her colorful eyes shine. New Year’s Eve done right!

new year's eve makeup

It’s true. Olive is basically a neutral in my book. It looks great on all skin types and matches with just about any color. Plus, emerald is one of my favorite go-to holiday colors to wear. But when it comes to what shade might work for you, take a page out of these celebs’ stylebooks from this past year.

Hopefully you’ve already got a dazzling dress picked out for tonight, so match your makeup to your outfit to make everything look cohesive and eye-popping. From rich golden eye shadow to blushing crimson lipstick, 2014 had its share of stunning fashion moments. You may not be attending a red carpet affair, but why not act like you are?

The Perfect Playlist to Ring in the New Year

nye playlist

The glittering sequins on your dress, the confetti scattered across the carpet, the sound of champagne bottles uncorking. There’s so much to take in on New Year’s Eve. So why not let us be the DJ? If you’re throwing an NYE bash of your own, we’ve compiled the perfect party mix made up of (mostly) current jams that everyone can dance to or at least slowly groove along to. These are the songs you’re going to remember as 2014 fades away and 2015 sparkles into view. From Nicki Minaj and Selena Gomez to Charli XCX and Ed Sheeran, this hour-long playlist is chock-full of songs from last year’s biggest breakout stars. So, go ahead, press play and let the sounds billow through your household. And when your music guru friend asks if you chose the songs, you can pretend you made the playlist yourself. We won’t tell anyone.

Traveling for the Holidays? What You NEED to Pack

Whether you’re flying or driving, the first rule of packing for the holidays is bring only what you need. Easier said than done, right? But when airlines force weight limits upon us, we really don’t want to be frantically sorting through our suitcases in the middle of the airport for what we can stuff into our carry-on bag. So, my number one tip to you is: Know your upcoming schedule of events, and pack outfits accordingly.

what to pack on a plane

>> Kenneth Cole jacket, Dex top, Lacoste backpack, UGG Australia boots, 7 for All Mankind jeans

Getting there >> Wear your heaviest jacket and clunkiest boots on the plane. Yes, this can be a pain when it comes to stripping down for TSA agents, but it’s worth it when your luggage is a couple pounds lighter. It’s also a good idea to dress in layers because planes tend to be cold one minute and super stuffy the next. Wearing a jacket, a sweater, and a simple tank keeps you prepared for every eventuality. Don’t forget to bring your biggest purse and a useful backpack for all your essentials!

Outfit of the Week: Deck the Halls

mens outfit of the day

>> Marc New York jacket, Fred Perry polo, Diesel beanie, Ben Sherman jeans, Lacoste boots, Lacoste belt, Louis Chevrolet watch

There’s no two colors easier to match and pull off than navy and tan. That’s why every man needs this outfit in his closet for something simple to throw on during those winter days when it would be so much easier to stay in a warm bed. These jeans have a slim fit and a bit of stretch for the most comfortable second skin you’ll wear all season. Not to mention, the twin-tipped polo, ribbed beanie, and smooth leather boots are everyday staples that still give your look that extra edge. Top it all off with a sleek black jacket, complete with practical front pockets and a stand-up collar to brave the brisk December winds. You’re all set to trek through snowy trails and ice-covered grass, taking in nature’s most subtly beautiful time of year.

How to Wrap Oddly Shaped Gifts

It’s not just you or your lack of artistry – wrapping presents can be difficult. Tape is sticky. Scissors are unwieldy. Paper is fragile. On top of all that, some gifts don’t fit the box-shaped mold. Throw it in a bag and call it a day? Sure, you could, but the excitement and mystique is gone. Instead, take these instructions and make something beautiful. Or, at least try.

how to wrap difficult gifts

For stuffed animals:

Lay your fluffy fellow down on a sheet of tissue paper and tape where the ends meet. Put another sheet of tissue on top of that, taping at the opposite end. Cover with cellophane and tie wire ribbon around the ends, in the style of a giant piece of hard candy. Snip the ribbon for a polished finish.

For bottles:

Wrap tissue paper or cellophane around the bottle. Then, roll a layer of wrapping paper around that. Tape the ends together. Fold the paper over the bottom of the bottle and tape this as well, securing it in place. Cut the top layer of wrapping paper at the top so that it’s shorter than the tissue. Cinch the paper at the neck of the bottle and fluff it out with your hands. Use wire-trimmed ribbon to tie a double knot around the neck, and add a custom bow for flair!
