New at Designer Studio: Camper

Camper_logoFounded in Spain in 1877, Camper’s legacy has thrived on their quality products and their innovative designs. With a strong passion for design, they’ve branched out to other projects like the hotel business! Their style is for those who appreciate classic looks with some unconventional twists. Here are some examples of classic styles made with Camper influence.

Camper® Men’s Peu Slip-on in Tan

36538001-SAUVAGE(1-base-thumbnail-centered)

Camper® Men’s Romeo in Black

The Peu is a slip-on sneaker for men that’s made of leather and recyclable materials. It also has a specific shape that separates it from the rest. With the odd shape of the foot in mind, the shoe is molded so that your feet naturally fit.

The Romeo is a boot that takes influences from a rugged desert shoe and a classy oxford shoe. With sleek styling, it was created with a vulcanized rubber sole. In other words, it has sophisticated style, but has the comfort of a sneaker!

Fall Colors: Rich in Brown

Now that fall is here, clothing colors will start to get darker, richer, and less pastel-y. Scarves and gloves are finally freed from the depths of the closet and jackets take charge of the wardrobe. Darker colors tend to take over the fall season, but there is one color that pulls its weight in every season. That color is brown–yes, brown! They say black goes with everything, but brown is a lot friendlier when it comes to mixing colors.

Imagine this outfit without the brown items. While the colors still go very well together, it would lack some simple contrast and would look incomplete. If the shoes and accessories were brighter the outfit may have ended up looking washed out. If the same pieces were darker, the colors would risk looking segmented and chopped up. Outfits are ensembles, not pieces! The brown ties everything together by adding the desired darkness without being overbearing. As a result, you get an outfit that’s light and well put together.

Goorin Bros® Men’s Burbank Flatcap in Tan

Dark rich browns and lively tans are classic neutral hues that can roughen up or soften a look. As you saw in the first outfit, the brown brought the outfit together. Most of the time, the brown pieces will be shoes or accessories like a large leather purse for women or a trendy hat for men. Browns can add some life into darker combinations or enhance colorful ones by accenting the warm undertones. It can add color without adding too much color.

This cozy black and cream outfit is a great example of brown playing up both darker and lighter colors. Black is the main color and has the potential to make the outfit very gloomy. However, the boots offer the right amount of contrast for both sides and works right in the middle! It’s dark enough to enhance the black, but it’s also light enough to play up the warm tones in the scarf and sweater.

B3222-DARK TAN(5)

Fred Perry® Men’s Vintage Tennis Leather in Tan

48309-TAN(1)

Diba® True Women’s Ram Sey Boots in Tan

Tall leather boots for women is a coveted favorite in the colder months and are always sold in black and brown. Men’s leather boots are also a favorite, but men’s brown leather sneakers are a great option for more relaxed styles. We love colors, but brown is the easiest neutral to play with; especially for footwear. If you look at the two previous outfits, both pairs of boots work their magic in a shade of brown.

INCEPTION

To have a direct side by side comparison, we pulled up this still shot of Leonardo DiCaprio (center), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (left), and Tom Hardy (right) from the 2010 hit movie, “Inception”. With DiCaprio and Levitt both sporting a similar brown leather jacket, you can compare how browns play with warm and cool color tones. Think about it this way; unless you’re going for a bold and loud look, most strong contrasting colors are for sport team logos and Lady Gaga. Everyday wear is more subtle and these two actors are wearing fine examples of it in brown. DiCaprio’s outfit is much darker and more “serious” looking, but note how it’s not completely masked out by another color.

Always remember that fashion is what you buy, but style is how you wear them! So the next time you find yourself stuck in a color rut, try playing around with brown. The color combinations may surprise you. Also, you can always start small with brown accessories to get a feel for combinations that you like. The more comfortable you get with mixing and matching colors, the easier it will be to style around larger pieces like brown blazers, pants, and dresses!

DS Behind the Scenes: Photo Shoots

We can’t always do photo shoots, but when we do, we take off our retail/e-commerce hats and we become stylists, coffee runners, and interior decorators. Here at Designer Studio, we believe that our customers should always be able to see what’s new and what clothing looks like on a real person. Women’s dresses look very different on a still mannequin, folded jeans don’t look like what men’s jeans are supposed to look like, and hangers don’t really show you how high collar jackets can wonderfully frame the face. Here’s a sneak peek at our crazy photo shoot mornings!

If you’ve been to our California store, you can see that everything is organized and has its place. When we shoot, we work some serious magic. One minute, we’re a store. The next minute, we’re a set!

IMG_5963_edit  1

Our shoots always start very early, but at least one of us gets to have their hair done…

14

We pick and sort through a lot of trendy clothing and shoes before we shoot. With shoes, we aim to grab a few different options, but we always end up with a whole lot more. It happens every time! There’s nothing wrong with having at least 10 pairs of fashion sneakers, right?

5  4

Our photographer, Carlos, guides our models into the poses we need. Don’t underestimate posing for the camera! Being still is pretty much the last thing we’re asking from them. We tell them to be natural in some kind of position that’s completely unnatural in the real world. It’s all about working angles.

behind the scenes 3  15

9  behind the scenes

Plus, there are the lights. One thing is for sure, the models are troopers for enduring a lot of flashing lights so early in the morning!

behind the scenes 5

In between photos and wardrobe changes, there’s also a lot happening. Our models get in and out of outfits like superheroes and all without messing up their hair or makeup. A whole new hairstyle happens in minutes and touch ups on the set are lightning fast. If your interested in modeling for us, we’re always looking for fresh new faces! Designer Studio casting calls go on year-round, and we’d love to hear from you.

When we finally wrap up the shoot, we head straight upstairs to our DS office and start processing the photos for our website. We get excited when we get new  items for our stores and we hope you do too! Go ahead and browse our blog and website for our newest items. It’s updated regularly and you can find something for any style. Leave us a comment, like us on our Designer Studio Facebook page, or stop by one of our Designer Studio store locations!

Sweatshirt Fashion Trends

In the fashion world, we know that everything changes at a very fast pace. While some things are new and innovative, other things are recycled, reused, and have new life breathed into them.  Sweatshirts are one of those things. People say that the button down shirt is a true timeless classic, but it seems sweatshirts have been making their stamps on fashion for decades.

We recently came across this article: The Rise of the Fashion Sweatshirt – BoF – The Business of Fashion. What was once a staple of tourists and lazy afternoons has now become a fashionable piece of clothing. Not just for casual wear either. From the schoolyard, to pro athletes, to red carpet glamor; sweatshirts have made their stamp on  fashion. Usually, they are perceived as a dull garment that you only use when you’re out running errands, or coming home from the gym, or when you have the flu. But it seems like everyone is treating like a dirty little secret; it can be worn comfortably, it can be edgy, it can be… sexy.

Fashion trends (even the high end stuff) has taken hints from the humble garment, particularly the hood. Why? Well, a sweatshirt, sweater, or hoodie (whatever you prefer to call it) is something completely practical, incredibly comfortable, and very customizable. We’re glad that it’s a fashion trend that works for a lot of styles and doesn’t compromise comfort. Here’s some examples of what the sweatshirt has become.

Plain or Plain With Print

31J2L00-BLK-WHT(1)

Desigual® Women’s Sweater

This is by far the most common sweatshirt type. From company logos, to sport teams, to pretty patterns; a plain sweatshirt with a printed graphic is easily customizable to anyone. Find a blank one and it can be turned into anything you’d like with a simple graphic print. These days, they’re easily paired with shorts during the warmer and colder months. Throw on the right accessories and a sweater instantly becomes more fashionable.

                      Casually Sexy

The girl-next-door look can easily become enticingly edgy. The magic happens with one or two things: the bulkiness of the hood and collar actually frame the head and body quite nicely, or if the style is played to show some skin (usually the shoulders), the look becomes tastefully sultry.

 A Leather Jacket Soul Mate

This picture of Star Trek actor Chris Pines shows a favorite trend: a leather jacket over a plain sweatshirt. It’s casual and versatile without being too relaxed. It’s a look that both men and women can use, but can bepersonalized to no end. Some things are just meant to go together.  The look won’t be going anywhere anytime soon and we’re pretty happy about it.

The Hooded Dress

Vanessa Hudgens and Karolina Kurkova

Vanessa Hudgens and Karolina Kurkova

Vanessa Hudgens and Karolina Kurkova are wearing a Green Sequin Hooded Wrap Dress by Diane von Furstenberg.  Sweaters with hoods are a staple of lounge wear and all things cozy, but every few years the fashion world is graced with some form of a hooded dress (a real dress, not a Halloween costume!). It has a similar vibe to the vintage style of headscarves, but with a more futuristic appeal. Who would have thought that a hood would make something seem vintage and futuristic at the same time? Casual or glamorous, people seem to love hoods.

Whatever your style is, long live the sweatshirt!

Back to School: A “New Shoe” Guide

Row of shoes and boots on a wooden floor

It’s that time again. Summer is coming to an end and it’s that hectic time of back-to-school shopping. While you’ll be stocking up on school supplies, don’t forget about your (or your kids’) feet! Whether it’s the first day of kindergarten or the last semester of college, here are 3 styles you must consider investing in. Remember, quality is priority. You need it to last for at least a school year, right?

Sneakers With Rubber Soles

They’re already a staple of casual wear, but, more importantly, they offer more protection and stability than flip-flops, sandals, flats, or dress shoes. Canvas sneakers and leather sneakers are both common, but it’ll be up to you to decide what suits you best. Canvas is lighter and cheaper, but leather is more durable and a little more expensive.

Make sure you go for rubber soles. They provide grip and can handle all the movement you’ll be putting them though. Remember, shoe laces andstraps can adjust the fit as the shoe stretches out over time and laces can always be replaced.

Athletic Shoes

This is especially important for kids in the K-12 education levels. You have to consider recess, physical education classes, and extra curricular athletics. Unless you are required to purchase specific shoes (cleats, track spikes, dance shoes, etc.) you should invest in a pair of good athletic shoes. There are two main types to consider: running shoes and training shoes. There’s a common misconception that they’re the same thing, but they’re actually designed for different movements. Take a look at some of our Onitsuka Tiger™ shoes.

ot_sak

The obvious differences will be in the size and the tread on the sole. Running shoes, in general, tend to be a little bulkier because of the extra padding. You’ll find more arch support and a rugged sole that should extend up the toe and heel a bit. They are intended to grip different terrain and are specifically designed for forward motion.

On the other hand, training shoes tend to be on the slimmer side, have a flatter sole, and a lighter tread. They’re not intended for long distance running, but geared for more repetitive movements like weight training or aerobics.

Dress Shoes

There will always be dressy functions to go to at any age. Most ladies will invest in a few pairs of shoes. Men, on the other hand, may need some convincing. Invest in a good quality shoe that you can wear to multiple occasions in multiple outfits. You don’t have to wear that one pair every single time, but having that go-to option can really save some time if you don’t have much of it. Men may stumble upon the whole “leather sole vs. rubber sole” thing. At this point, it’s all about personal preference and how formal the occasion is. Generally, the consensus for male dress shoes is that rubber isn’t very formal.

Men, if you’re not into dress shoes, opt for some leather loafers or classic leather sneakers. Tip: if you decide to go with sneakers to a dressy occasion, save the crazy colors and funky laces for another day.

Material World: A Breakdown of Everyday Fabrics

ssTshirtTag_FrontEver wonder what’s the best material to wear for hot sunny days or those chilly nights? Here’s a breakdown of some common fabrics that can help determine what you’ll be wearing tomorrow!

Cotton: Versatile? Yes. Will it keep you dry? No.

Ah, cotton. The friendliest of the materials. It’s soft, breathable–and absorbent. For some reason people have been mislead to believe that cotton “wicks” away moisture. “Absorbing” moisture is not at all the same as “wick away” moisture. Cotton doesn’t wick away anything. It simply absorbs. Drench a cotton shirt  in water or your morning coffee and it’ll be soaking wet for quite a while. Ask any fitness guru, outdoor explorer, or any expert who has to stay dry all day and they’ll tell you that cotton is the enemy. Cotton is great for a lot of clothing, just not when you are trying to stay dry.

Polyester: Keeping you dry.

If you want to stay dry, Polyester is where it’s at. Unlike cotton, it actually wicks away moisture. Polyester has low absorbency which allows moisture to evaporate quickly. That’s why most athletic clothing is made with it. Remember, this mostly applies to clothing that has been woven. A polyester shirt will keep you cool and dry, but a faux leather jacket that’s made of polyester will not.

Silk: The silly trickster.

Silk is luxurious, soft, and can be tricky to deal with. The tightness of the weave can vary how light or heavy it is, but one thing for sure is that it becomes particularly bothersome if you start to sweat in it. Our advice? Don’t wear it when it’s hot and humid outside or to the job interview of your life. There is nothing comfortable about clothing clinging to your skin. Also, since the material has a natural shimmer, wet spots are really obvious and stains are nearly impossible to remove. Save silk for special occasions, where there’s adequate air conditioning, or at least wear it with an undershirt.

Denim: All year round.

Denim is everywhere and can be made into anything from jeans to cell phone cases. You can find anything made of the stuff. Denim is great all year round, but it’s cotton based so it can stay wet for quite a while. If you want something a little lighter, look for a blend of materials. Otherwise, your best bet is to feel the heaviness and thickness of the denim to determine how hot or cool you’ll be in that garment.

Leather: It’s used for protection as well as style.

Remember, leather wasn’t always a fashion statement, but simply a rugged material that could take a beating. It’s used by anyone from cowboys, motorcycle groups, and city fashionistas and made into things like shoes, car seats, and exercise equipment. Leather is durable and heavy, but it can be made as stiff or as flexible as you need it to be. It’ll definitely keep you warm, so don’t try to play it off cool in the summer when you’re sweating a storm under your leather jacket.

Rayon/Viscose: Lightweight and breezy.

These materials are perfect for the warmer months because they’re so light. They may not wick away moisture like polyester, but they aren’t as absorbent as cotton.  The only issue to really look out for is how the material acts when you wash them. They can usually hold their own in the washer just fine, but it’s the dryer that may affect the size of your garment. We suggest to wash it like you normally would, but hang them up to air dry instead.

The Tree of Life

Castro-Limot Tree Of LIfeEvery few weeks, Designer Studio goes to the Castro-Limón foundation and personally gives them the money that the company was able to fund raise for them. As a result, children were able to receive cancer treatment. Take a look at the picture. See the tree in the background? It’s a symbol, a reminder, a message that a donation of any size can have a huge impact on someone’s life. The tree is adorned with little paper dolls that represent donations that were a minimum  of $300. Each donation helps the “roots” grow which strengthens the foundation and spreads hope.

Inscribed at the base of the tree are the names of those who have helped raise funds for Castro-Limón’s cause. Designer Studio is a proud contributor.  In store, we sell chocolates, bracelets, watches, and water, that directly benefit the Castro-Limón Foundation. We also take donations at the register and online. Click the donate button on our blog or check out our Castro-Limón page on our site and you can make a personal donation via PayPal. A little goes a long way, and a moment like this is worth it every single time.

Pink Dress Fashion

Miranda Kerr rocks the pink dress three ways

Spring and summer fashion is all about the flirty, the fun, and the feminine. Few items in your closet have the ability to make you feel instantly more like a girly-girl. Of those select few, though, nothing does it like a pink dress. This season’s shades range from the rosy to the hot, in lengths from demure to daring. Pair with pink or leather flip-flops, soft, natural make-up, and simple accessories and you’re instantly transformed into a blushing beauty.

Try a soft, flowing maxi in a dusty, earthy shade of pink to combine two hot trends – the pink dress and bohemian style. Choose simple brown leather sandals and other earth-toned accessories, and you’re ready for a stroll on the beach or a concert in the park.
