Budget Dressing

Think it’s impossible to look great on a tight budget? Think again! Shop smart this spring and you’ll have a closet full of pieces you can wear for seasons to come. Here are just two ways to get the look for less:

#1: Be willing to pay more for quality, classic pieces. When it comes to the latest trendy graphic tank, you can afford to pay less. But investing in well-made, classic pieces is worth the time and money; these items can serve as the foundation of your wardrobe for seasons (and years) to come. Spend a little more for a great pair of tailored black pants or a crisp white button-down shirt. The up-front investment might be more than you’re used to paying, but your payoff will be having pieces you love in your wardrobe that look great with the latest trends and don’t need to be replaced every year.

#2Wait for a sale. Everything eventually goes on sale. Keep an eye out for pieces you love, then pay attention to the store’s sale cycle. (Signing up for the store’s emails can get you sale alerts and coupons!) This is an especially great way to get those timeless, classic investment pieces. Decide what your go-ahead price is, then wait for the items to be marked down. One caveat: The longer you wait to buy, the more likely it is that you will have trouble finding the size you need.

Let’s Face It

This spring, make-up is all about playing up your locks. Next to your skin tone, your hair color the biggest factor in which make-up colors and looks you can pull off. Instead of staying with the same old safe neutral palate, or (even worse) attempting to match your make-up to your outfit, let your tresses be your guide.

Play up blonde locks with shimmery, sheer shades

Your golden tresses and highlights mean that sheer, shimmery shades are for you. Lovely shades of blue and green complement the eyes, while sheer apricot or light pink blushes add a touch of natural flush to your cheeks. Iridescent and shimmery are the perfect partner for blondes of all shades. In the spirit of the season, keep your look light, fresh, and dewy.

Brunettes can go bold

Brunettes can go bold

Your rich locks mean you can go for bright, vibrant hues that might intimidate your lighter-tressed counterparts! Burgundies, reds, plums, and metallics are perfect for playing up darker haired beauty. Don’t be afraid to go bold with bright lips and eyes!

Redheads can play up their warm tresses with airy, sheer shades this spring. Sheer greens brighten the eyes, while soft apricot on the cheeks will give you that just-in-from-the-garden glow. Keep your look natural and fresh with soft pastels.

Fiery Christina Hendricks keeps it sheer

Sneaky, Sneaky!

Who says comfortable can’t be stylish? This season’s wedge sneakers take comfort out of the gym and onto the runway – or at least the office. Pair with jeans or shorts – even shorts and tights for those still-chilly days – or a bright skirt. Any top will do, from one of spring’s breezy embroidered tunics to a graphic tee.

Earth Daze

Spring has returned and the earth is in bloom! Let your inner flower child out to play with 1960s inspired fashions in blazing burnt orange and rich brown. These tones and shapes have come a long way since those goldenrod, orange, and avocado polyester bridesmaid dresses in your parents’ wedding album. This season, deep earth tones pair with pops of burgundy and dark blue to make a statement that’s anything but subdued or dowdy. The delicate lines of peasant blouses and floaty dresses add a touch of romance and whimsy, while embroidery lets you bring in just the right flash of color.

This spring’s bold patterns, bright colors, and airy fabrics are all about high fashion that’s also down to earth. Whether you choose to unleash your inner Earth Mother or just add a hint of bohemian to the board room, you’ll find something to love!

Here are just a couple of ways to make this look work for you.

The Diva’s in the Details

Embroidery adds a feminine touch and a flash of color to the classic tunic or peasant blouse. Pair a floaty, body-skimming tunic or peasant blouse with your favorite pair of straight-legged jeans for a casual but classy look, perfect for dinner or a concert with friends. If you want something a little more feminine, choose a boho skirt or peasant dress in one of the season’s rich tones. Whether you choose a bold pattern in rich golds and oranges like Vanessa Hudgens (below) or something in spring’s rich earth hues, you’re sure to be the hippest hippie chick on the block. Pair a vivid skirt with a simple white peasant top, bandeau, or tank and you’re set for the beach, the farmer’s market, or brunch.Wedge sneakers or flip flops and simple accessories – think silver earrings and bracelets – complete the look.

Pull Off the Look

You can go delicate or go bold with this look. This classic embroidered tunic blouse from Lucky pairs well with dark-washed straight-leg jeans and sandals. The flowers and leaves around the bottom bring in a touch of flower power without being overwhelming. Lucky also offers this short-sleeved peasant top with bold orange flowers embroidered down the front. If you want to go global, bright Eastern-inspired tunics are the way to go. This red tribal-influenced tunic from Lucky pairs equally well with a skirt or jeans. White-on-white tops like this one from Lucky look great with boldly colored or patterned skirts. Finish off the look with simple leather flip-flops like these from Report Women, or choose funky wedges from Lacoste.
