Give Thanks for Accessories! Our Fall 2012 Accessories Report

Fashion trends come and go, but some basics still apply.  The trends for Fall 2012 showcase new twists on old standbys like the oversize weekender bag, boots, and high-heeled shoes.  We’re seeing everything from brushed, polished silver accents to patchwork hides and ipad/laptop portfolios disguised as designer purses. So, how do you match up the new trends with your current wardrobe?  It’s easy, and we’ll show you how to do it!

The Weekender:  With the holidays upon us, many of us are heading out of town to spend a few days with family and friends.  Instead of bringing along a boring suitcase or the same old overnight bag you’ve had since college, show up at Grandma’s house with a brand-new designer weekend bag.  Your options this fall run from black patent leather with handles, exotic animal leather in tans and browns, multi-colored fabric, or white leather with faux fur accents.  The bag pairs well with a winter wardrobe of dark denim jeans, comfy UGG boots, and a stylish peacoat.

Silver Accents:  This fall, the runway took a break from last season’s gold and showed us different ways to incorporate silver into our wardrobe; everything from brushed and polished to sculpted silver made its debut.  The silver accessories adorning the runway ran the gamut from necklaces to collars and even chains.  You can mix and match these silver accessories with trendy options like our Cecico sweater in charcoal and YA Brand long sleeve black dress, or the soft and feminine Umgee embroidered ivory top.

Heading for New Heights: Recent years has seen the popularity of the ankle boot on the runways. But this season, the knee-high boot is making a comeback.  You’ll find tons of options with these boots – from over-the-knee, to wedge heels, stilettos, and more. Many of them showcase accents like studded leather, silver buckles, burnished silver grommets, and even colorful hues of animal hide.  Our bootsrun the range of comfy sheepskin UGG® boots, to suede desert wedges or tomboy boots by TOMS®, and leather riding boots by Lacoste®. Slip them on over skinny jeans, add a sweater, and you’re set for a crisp, fall day!

Mix it up:  A completely innovative and new trend seen on the runways is the “remix” in footwear.  Designers have put together a patchwork of materials, hides, pony hair, and color to introduce a whole new way to put your best foot forward.  Ankle boots, high-heels, platforms and Mary Jane’s were seen sporting interesting mixes of leather, color, and design.  There were mixtures of half black leather and half brown animal hide, brown leather with gold accents and black patent leather toes, platforms in navy blue leather with tortoise shell heel, tongue, and sole, and an eclectic mix of color blocking and suede platforms for a totally retro look.  You’ll want to show these off with dresses, skirts, or skinny jeans this fall.

Cyber Monday is a Month Away! Are You Ready?

We can hear it now—but Designer Studio Store, it’s OCTOBER! Why are you talking about the holidays NOW? Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and the rest of the winter holidays seem to come faster and faster every year. Now, with the economy showing signs of rebound, this is likely to be one of the craziest holiday seasons in the last five years. The question is, come Cyber Monday, are you going to be prepared to get all of the amazing online deals you want? Or, are you going to be caught in a swirl of red tape? You can get some great deals on Cyber Monday, but if you don’t keep a sharp eye out on sales tax, order quantities, shipping policies, return policies, and shipping charges, your Cyber Monday might not be so merry.

Here are the top four things you need to remember when you are shopping online (not just during the season, but any time you shop online.)

#1: Dollars and Cents—A lot goes into shopping online. You can go into the store and walk out knowing exactly what your state tax rate is and the price on the tag. Online shopping is a different animal, especially on Cyber Monday. Pay attention to whether or not you need to pay sales tax. In some states, that could cost you up to 10% that you weren’t planning to spend. Also, pay attention to sale prices and promo codes. If you have a promo code, be sure to enter it correctly and make sure it is properly applied in your shopping cart.

#2: What and How Many— Especially on Cyber Monday, there are limits to the number of a certain item you can buy. Be sure to check order quantities and make sure that the order quantity you want is properly reflected in your shopping cart. If there is a limit, check to see if that limit is per order or per household. If you are ordering clothes, make sure you are choosing the right size.

#3: The Terms of the Deal— The deals are amazing on Cyber Monday, but sometimes you have to spend a certain amount to get the discount or buy items of a certain type. Make sure you are clear on the terms of the deal so you aren’t surprised when it’s time to check out. Also, if you are ordering a gift for someone who likes to return things, be sure to check return policies. It will save you a lot of stress later.

#4: Getting It There—Shipping is one of the biggest costs and time-swallowers in online shopping. Make sure when you shop online that you are clear on shipping costs and (most importantly) you know how long it will take to get your item to you. If you are ordering last minute, make sure your item will arrive before it’s time to open presents. If not, it might not be such a happy holiday.

Be Natural!

Emma Watson, Eva Mendes, Selena Gomez, and Nicole Richie—successful, popular, and all over the natural beauty trend! This fall, clear, glowing skin, statement eyes, and pale lips are the biggest fashion statement. The look is being rocked from head to toe, with all natural skin products, fair trade clothing, and even vegan shoes!

Selena Gomez was spotted at JFK airport sporting an all natural look, sunglasses and vegan TOMS shoes, shoes made with no animal products or by products. To luxe up her relaxed look, she carried a Louis Vuitton canvas bag, and wore a pair of Ray-Ban 2140 wayfarers.

Nicole Richie took her daughter to a pumpkin patch, looking relaxed and natural from head to toe in UGG Australia’s Classic Black Short Boots.

Things to look for when you are going for natural beauty:

Hair: Tousled, brushed but worked over with mousse so it has a natural luster.

Makeup: Neutrals, browns, blacks, and green – think colors of the earth. Your lips should be pale or very lightly colored. Bronzer for the skin is also appropriate.

Clothing: It’s all about comfortable clothes you can move in. Opt for loose blouses, flowing dresses, and well worn jeans.

Shoes: Again, comfort all the way. Vegan TOMS make a statement about style and sustainability. You can’t get any more natural than that!

Fall is Classic: Fall 2012 Runway Trends

Both grandma and grandpa better guard their closets because, this fall, vintage is back—and it’s back big! Looking at the runways, beauty trends are getting more natural and clothes are getting more conservative. Ruffles showing femininity, shiny accents, mature looks, long sweaters, tweed—the list of vintage items that are coming back with a vengeance goes on and on, bending genders like never before. In addition to vintage, the military look is back for another season with a twist—leather. The all black look from the movie The Matrix was sprinkled throughout runway presentations, making the fall 2012 runway look like a tale of two personalities.

As the seasons change, fall runway looks account for lots of layers to shed as the weather goes from warm to cold. Fur creeps into the closet as well as tights, and (gasp) whites WELL after Labor Day.

Here’s how to make those very different fashion personalities work to your advantage.

The Matrix Meets The Battlefield

Dresses aren’t left in the summer closet; they are just updated and layered for warmth, with a harder edge than we have seen in previous seasons. Substantial fabric, metallic accents, and leather are the three ingredients necessary to pull of this look. Tommy Hilfiger continues to impress with his interpretation of the trend.

Pull Off the Look

You have two options here, a vest with a long sleeve counterpart or a jacket. This jacket by Kenneth Cole Reaction is one of our favorites. It trades zippers for buttons up the left side, a high angled collar and a hem that stops at the hip. If you are going the vest route, we recommend borrowing this black herringbone vest from your boyfriend’s closet and then softening it up with a black long sleeve dress and some sexy boots. Either way, boots are essential, the farther they go up your calf the better. We recommend the UGG® Australia Women’s Black Cosima Tall Boot. It’s plush pebbled leather, fixed metal rivets and wooden heel are the perfect statement in this The Matrix meets the battlefield outfit.

Wrap Yourself in Snow White

White after Labor Day—this fall, you bet it’s not only appropriate it’s the trend to grab on to. Head to toe white graces long coats, feminine tops and flowing pants. Even the shoes have gone crystal white. Here, J. Mendel goes white out, delivering a classy look that says, “I’m feminine, but I’m an angel who means business.”

Pull Off the Look

Head to toe white, or ivory, delivers an angelic look, perfect for when you want to make a statement. Start off with pairing a white undershirt with this soft and delicate cardigan from Umgee USA with a pair of white dress pants or skinny jeans. Then, tie it all together with a pair of lily boots. We like the UGG® Australia Women’s Heirloom Lace Up. It’s an all-weather breath of fresh air with a cotton weave upper and sweet grosgrain lacing up the back.

Go Digging in Grandma’s Closet

Grandma is one stylish lady! This fall, granny gets her due as true vintage bursts into style. Tweeds, sheers, patterns, lace, anything classic goes when you are going vintage. Tory Burch paired this look on the fall 2012, a sea of blue, flowers, and patterns.

Pull Off the Look

Vintage is a tale of two personalities, loose and comfortable or tailored and trim. Lucky Brand has captured this vibe quite well, bringing back paisley, embroidery, busy patterns, and metallic embellishments. Embellish heavily up top and keep it simple on the feet or wear strategically placed accents and let your shoes make the statement. TOMS Shoes Corbel is the perfect shoe to bridge the summer and fall seasons. The sturdy canvas will keep your foot warm while the peep toe says, “Hey, it’s not even in the 50s yet!”

Jeans for YOUR Body Type

When it comes to buying jeans, guys have it easy.  All they need to know is waist size and leg length and they’re good to go.  Women, on the other hand, have much more to consider when it comes to buying jeans that can take us from drab to fab in the time it takes to slip them on.  So, how do you know which style to buy that hugs you in all of the right places?  We’ve taken the guesswork out of it for you, and found out the best styles for your shape; whether you’re a pear, an hourglass, an apple, or a ruler.

If you’re a Pear:  You’ll want to find something that caters to your bottom-heavy curves with a contoured cut that comes up higher in the back, won’t gap at the waist, and offers a wider leg to balance your hips.  Jeans in a dark wash with tone-on-tone stitching also creates the illusion of a long, lean line.

If you’re an Hourglass:  Embrace your curves with flattering jeans in a boot cut style with a dark wash.  You’ll also want to make sure they have a mid-rise waist so they fit snug on your hips and create smooth, lovely lines.  Golden stitching and pocket details will also show off and enhance your curves.

If you’re an Apple:  Show off your sexy legs while minimizing bulk around the middle with a sleek pair of legging jeans, also known as jeggings. Part jeans, part leggings, they showcase slender thighs while minimizing your midsection.  With a higher-than-usual stretch content than other jeans, you’ll get a slim fit that hugs every contour in all the right places.

If you’re a Ruler:  Emphasize and create the illusion of curves by wearing skinny jeans, jeans with a low-waist, or high-waisted jeans with a belt to highlight the waist area.  Straight cut jeans are also a great choice because they taper slightly at the ankle and draw attention to the size of your hips and thighs.
