Fashion Forward: What’s New for 2012?

As we head into a new year, we also head into new trends in fashion.  Most of the fashion trends from 2011 will be carried over but we will start to see some interesting fashions begin to emerge.  With the popularity of shows like Boardwalk Empire and Mad Men, the styles of the 1920’s and 1960’s are coming back with a vengeance.  We’ve checked out the fashion trends of 2012 and wanted to share them with you.

Women’s Fashion:

The flapper look is in!   style that embodies romance, women’s freedom, independence and individuality all in one.  Expect to see loose-fitting, flowing dresses with embellishments like fringe and beading.  Other elements of this look are strappy high-heels, flapper headbands, and drop waists.

Another trend to look for in 2012 is the mod look of the early 1960’s.  Think short hems, block colors, and masculine flat shoes like penny loafers.  Expect to see a return of short, boyish hairstyles, graphic prints and geometric patterns.  For the fall of 2012, you can expect to see swing capes and coats.

Men’s Fashion:

You can still expect to see the trends of recent years like skinny jeans, baggy jeans, and loose-fitting shirts.  But a new trend is showing up that will be a style of 2012 if not the style of the year.  Relaxed tailoring has been seen on the horizon for men.  With this coming style, the focus is not on relaxed so much as it is on tailoring.

Relaxed in recent years has usually meant street wear – baggy, and casual.  The new trend is not formal but not totally casual either.  Picture a man’s suit that you could wear outside of the office or in a less formal setting.  Expect to see pleated pants, looser-fitting trousers and slacks, and seamless shoulders in men’s coats.

Making the Cut

We’ve entered into a new decade where it seems that anything goes.   You can be a hippie chick one day with your favorite wide leg jeans and edgy the next day wearing your skinny jeans.  How do you know what to choose from and what cut of jean looks best?  We’ve put together a mini go-to style guide to help you figure out what works best as we head into 2012.

Boot-Cut/Flare:  These are an excellent choice for anyone who is a little curvier than most.  They flare out just enough towards the bottom to balance out your hips. They also look great worn with heels, flats and of course, boots.

Best fit for: Women with curvy or full-figures, Men with an average size or husky frame.

Seen on:  America Ferrera, Seth Rogen

Straight Leg:  This type of jean falls straight from the hip to create a balanced look.  Like boot-cut jeans, straight leg jeans look great worn with heels, flats, and boots.

Best fit for:  Women with slightly curvy to full-figures, Men with small to average frames.

Seen on:  Blake Lively, Shia LeBouf

Skinny:  If your style is edgy, punk, or skater, skinny jeans are for you.  Form fitting and body hugging, they are perfect for tucking into boots or wearing with canvas skater shoes.

Best fit for: Women with smaller frames, Men with small to average size frames.

Seen on:  Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson

Wide-Leg: Create a hippie/boho look with wide-leg jeans.  They are great paired with wedge heels or chunky heel shoes for a retro look.  As their name suggests, they flare out wide as they fall down from the hip and sweep the floor at their length.

Best fit for:  Women of small-medium build, Men with small-average frames.

Seen on:  Katie Holmes, Rachel Bilson

Accessories For Men

Whether they realize it or not, men need to accessorize too.  The little touches here and there help pull their look together.  Making just one simple change can help them go from day to night, casual to sophisticated, or edgy to formal.  We’ve made some suggestions and offered solutions to help even the most wardrobe-challenged guy head out the door.

Edgy: To rock the edgy look, combine some dark washed boot cut jeans, a leather lace-up boot , leather jacket, and a trucker style hat.

Sporty: Carry your basic black wallet, shades, sneakers or whatever else you might need on your way to the gym in a sporty carry-all.  Top your look with a baseball cap and you’re good to go.

Classic: Keep your tailored and classic look going when you add accessories like a portfolio organizer bag.  It has a simple style, holds documents for work or school and looks great with straight leg jeans and a button-down collared shirt.

Accessories For Women

Little touches like jewelry, belts, hats, scarves, gloves, and shades add pop and pizazz to your look.  Believe it or not, you can actually create a signature look even while wearing something as basic as jeans and a sweater.  Just add a few accessories here and there and Voila!  Your signature look is created and ready for the world!  We’ve taken the time to give you some ideas on how to create certain looks that are fashionable right now.

Trendy: Choose accessories like a military style hat paired with a leather wrap bracelet accented with gold to compliment your skinny jeans and knee-high boots.

Boho: To create this look, go with a flowing skirt coupled with comfortable ankle high moccasin boots. Add a side sling bag and a floppy hat to complete the look.

Casual:  Jeans are always a go-to wardrobe choice.  To accessorize for this look, simply choose a pair of classic aviator shades and a cable knit cap and scarf set.

Rockin’ the New Year

The never ending dilemma of every female who ever lived and the burning question of all time has to be  – ‘What am I going to wear??!!’   We’ve come up with some suggestions that should help you usher in the New Year with style.

Family gatherings are hard enough as it is.  Trying to figure out what to wear doesn’t help the situation.  Usually these are casual affairs so a nice pair of jeans, a stylish shirt and some cute shoes will do the trick.  You could also wear a sweater over skinny jeans tucked into boots.  This way you can be casual and fashionable while spending some quality time with your favorite family members while avoiding the not-so-favorite ones (I think we all have those!).

When you’re ready to head out that night to welcome in the New Year, casual just won’t cut it.  You can dress up your favorite pair of jeans with a flirty frock and glittery wedge heels.  If you prefer a dressy look, a long sleeved double knit sweater dress with black tights and ankle boots will keep you warm and trendy at the same time.

For guys ratty jeans and trashed shoes are not the way to go, even around family.  Pull on a simple five pocket jean and pair them with some casual sneakers for a classic look.  If you’re planning to head out to a late night party to welcome in the New Year, throw on a crisp button down long sleeve shirt and ward off the winter chill with a sport coat.

Gifts for Him…Gifts for Her…Gifts for YOU!

Holiday gift ideasThe holiday season is upon us and gift giving is on everyone’s mind.  It’s DEFINITELY on ours! To help you find the perfect gift for your special someone, we came up with a few suggestions we think you and anyone you plan on giving a gift to this season might like.

For Him –

Maybe it’s time to help him replace his favorite and old (like from high school kind of old) pair of jeans? Sure, you loved how he looked in them 10 years ago….but now they’re just ready for the charity pile and he’s not ready to let go. He’ll stop fighting about it when he opens up his presents to find a new pair designer jeans. Pair them with a long sleeve button down shirt and comfortable boat shoes for a complete outfit.

For Her –

Help your favorite gal pal, sister, or even your mom mix and match with what she already has for new looks all year long!  Giving her a new pair of boots would be a great addition to her shoe collection.  If she’s into a trendy and glitzy style, you can gift her with glittery wedge heels and skinny jeans.   She might also like a ruffled cardigan and ballet flats to wear with her favorite skirt if her style is flirty, romantic or vintage.

For You –

When the gifts are wrapped and ready, it’s time to take a deep breath and figure out what you would like to have as a gift.  If your jeans are ragged and worn, a new pair will be a nice addition to your wardrobe.  Maybe your jacket has seen better days, and your boots are scuffed beyond recognition?  If that’s the case then a new jacket and boots will be a welcome gift this year.

Of course, there’s always the possibility that gift giving is just too complicated because 1) you don’t know what the person wants 2) you’re not sure of their sizes and 3) it’s just too complicated! Most of us find that it’s just easier to give a gift card.  Then they can choose what they want.  It’s less complicated for you and easy shopping for them.
